Today’s game matches the 1964 Philadelphia Phillies at the 1971 Baltimore Orioles.
FRANK ROBINSON’S HOMER WINS 1-0 CONTEST FOR ORIOLES
BALTIMORE – Frank Robinson ended a long afternoon with a walk-off homer in the 13th inning to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
After retiring his first two batters in the 13th, Philadelphia’s Bobby Shantz (0-1) made a mistake to Robinson, who sent the ball over the Memorial Stadium fence sending the exhausted throng of Orioles fans home with smiles on their faces.
Baltimore’s Mike Cuellar and Philadelphia’s Jim Bunning hooked up in a scoreless duel for 10 innings before both exited the contest. Cuellar gave up four hits with four strikeouts. Bunning surrendered three hits and fanned four.
Neither team could score in the 11th or 12th after the starters retired for the day.
Philadelphia had runners and second and third in the 12th against Baltimore lefthander Eddie Watt, who held the Phillies scoreless for two innings. He was able get out the jam when Dick Allen fouled out and Wes Covington struck out.
Ed Roebuck took the mound for the Phillies after Bunning and blanked the Orioles for two frames. With two runners on base in the bottom of the 12th, Roebuck induced pinch-hitter Merv Rettenmund to hit into a double play to send the contest to the 13th.
Tom Dukes (1-0) picked up the win for the Orioles. He gave up a two-out single to Clay Dalrymple in the 13th before he fanned pinch-hitter Gus Triandos to set the stage for Robinson.
Robinson was the only Baltimore player with two hits. Tony Taylor and Ruben Amaro led the Phillies with two hits apiece.
Shoestring Catches 
When September began that year this looked like the possibility of becoming the actual World Series. The fall 1964 collapse of the Phillies is well documented. However, the pre-Frank Robinson Orioles also slumped that fall and the New York Yankees won the American League pennant.
