Today’s game matches the 1964 Cincinnati Reds at the 1946 St. Louis Cardinals.
JIM MALONEY FANS 16 AS CINCINNATI WINS IN 10TH
ST. LOUIS – Cincinnati’s Jim Maloney went the distance in an extra inning affair as the Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 at Sportsman’s Park.
Maloney (1-0) scattered eight hits and struck out at least one batter in each of his 10 innings of work. He struck out the side in the fifth inning, which included Enos Slaughter, Whitey Kurowski and Dick Sisler, who ironically was the manager of the 1964 Reds.
Howie Pollet (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Cardinals as he also tossed 10 innings, giving up 11 hits with four strikeouts.
Vada Pinson knocked in the first run of the contest as he grounded into a fielder’s choice in the top of the sixth frame. The Reds added another run in the seventh with Leo Cardenas had a RBI ground out.
The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring triple by Terry Moore and a RBI single by Stan Musial.
In the top of the 10th, Pinson produced a run with a single before Deron Johnson gave the Reds a two-run advantage with a solo homer.
St. Louis was able to answer in their half of the 10th, but is wasn’t enough. Red Schoendienst closed the gap to 4-3 with a single that scored the final run of the game.
Maloney ended the Cardinals hopes as he fanned Moore for the final out.

Did you leave Maloney in for all 10 innings as an effort to give the simulation a more authentic feel (as opposed to going with relievers earlier in the game)?

Yes, Jim Maloney actually threw a 10-inning no-hitter in real life. He was very good in this game and seemed to get better as it went along. Most of his strikeouts came later in the game.
